Sticking it to the librarian

I took my first AQN (absolute quiet nap) of the semester yesterday. Most people are intimidated by the absolute quiet room in the library. It's a weird thing - there's no authority enforcing it, just the users themselves. And when you walk in, you feel the collective gaze of focused people, who might otherwise be jolly and rowdy. I think it's the academic version of the panopticon. I like to quietly subvert this power by taking naps in this ultimate study space. When I leave after taking a nap, I have a knowing smirk on my face, an "I just did something naughty!" smile, because I've used these people's quiet for something they would not approve. I feel their jealous eyes on me, wishing they too could use their quiet for a lazy afternoon nap. I am doing my part to subvert the academic power structure.

I've noticed a lot more laptops in lecture classes lately. I don't really care either way if someone takes notes on a laptop in class, rather than by hand. But, it seems like a lot of people just use them to play solitaire or watch the OC. I saw a guy in class booking his flights to the caribbean for spring break. If you're doing that, why go to class? Seriously, WHY ARE U HERE? It's the sign of someone who intuitively knows that they don't need to be there, but isn't confident enough to act on it and just not go. Either go to class and pay attention, or stay at home and relax and sleep and have fun. The old "osmosis" theory of learning is as misguided when applied to one's presence in a classroom as it is to keeping one's books under one's pillow ( it is also misnamed - osmosis only involves water!). This generally just concerns those doing it, but sometimes it affects other people. How am I supposed to not watch the OC when it is playing on a laptop in front of me? You're bringing me down with you!

I have my first intramural low intensity soccer game tonight. I've never played soccer competitively. The only thing I can think of is whether or not I should wear my glasses...I think they'll be ok - it's low intensity right? Though, on my low intensity basketball team a few years ago, we got mauled over and over by a team of 7 foot tall guys who dunked on us every chance they got..

Things are changing around here

I changed the blog name again, building on my post from a week or two ago. This is a new era, the blog should reflect that. Also, I was never that happy with 2SMART4PRANKS; I love caps, but they were inappropriate for this.

I created a facebook event called 'Come play Mario Kart at my house' a few days ago. It took place tonight and was a great success. There was extreme sliding, nonstop battling, double balloon attacks, shouts of joy and sorrow, and heroism. I didn't have the chance to get any pics because I was too busy DOMINATING but next event I will document.
